How Often Do You Need Water Heater Maintenance? If you want to make sure that your system lasts for as long as you can make it, and runs efficiently the whole while, then regular water heater maintenance is essential. Depending on your water heater, you may have different maintenance needs—different models of water heaters, as well as the usage and quality of your water supply will all influence your specific needs. However, the usual rule of thumb that works for most cases is to get water heater maintenance at least once a year.

By getting annual water heater maintenance and inspections, you can help prevent some of the most common issues, like sediment buildup, corrosion, and the accumulation of scale—built-up sections of hard minerals. These issues, if left to themselves, can make your water heater not function as well, or maybe even cause it to fail entirely.

For tank-style heaters, we may need to flush the tank during our maintenance to remove any sediment settled on the bottom. For tankless water heaters, we will likely be cleaning the filters and making sure the pipes aren’t blocked by any buildup.

If, however, you notice anything odd in between yearly maintenance—things like odd noises, unpredictable changes in water temperature, or leaks—then it is usually a good idea to contact us for a check-in, no matter when your next planned maintenance date is. Issues can pop up at any time, so it is most important to stay on top of your system’s needs as they arise.

By staying on top of water heater maintenance, you can make sure that your home has reliably hot water while avoiding expensive replacements and repairs for as long as you can.
